(PORTLAND, OR) Keiko The Untold Story, will make its Oregon film festival premier at the 13th da Vinci Film Festival in Corvallis. The da Vinci Film Festival features 33 shorts and documentaries from around the country at the Darkside Cinema and the historic Majestic Theatre in downtown Corvallis. Keiko The Untold Story will air at the festival on Wednesday, July 13 at 7:00 PM at the Darkside Cinema and on Saturday, July 16 at 1:00 PM at the Majestic Theatre.

Film maker and Director Theresa Demarest will be in attendance for both showings. The film’s screening holds special importance for her: “I spent many years of my career as a musician in Corvallis and my son, Josh, was born here and am so looking forward to sharing this incredible story about Keiko’s life and legacy with old friends and new ones,” she stated.

At no time in recent history has a captive mammal garnered so much attention as Keiko, the orca star of the 1993 hit film, “Free Willy.” That film’s success, partnered with growing public interest in animals held in captivity, launched a crusade that called for Keiko’s release into the wild. The result: a multi-million dollar project that spanned four countries, weathered endless controversy and lasted nearly a decade. Through first-hand accounts by the marine mammal experts charged with his care, Keiko The Untold Story follows Keiko, his life, his legacy of hope, and the untold story of his extraordinary years in Iceland and Norway.

The film has already garnered critical acclaim and success at film festivals across the country including:

Winner Audience Favorite and Best Director – FirstGlance Hollywood Film Festival

Award of Merit (Feature Documentary) Indie Fest Competition

CINE, Golden Eagle Award

Winner Best Documentary, Best Editor and Best Director – American International Film Festival

Award of Excellence - The Accolade Film, Television, New Media & Videography Awards

Keiko The Untold Story will play next in August at the New York City International Film Festival and in September at the Cinema O Theater for the International Marine Animal DEFENDERS’ Association (IMADA) ‘Shadow’ Conference, in Miami, Florida.
